The foremost Scottish tapestry artists’ collective STAR* (Scottish Tapestry Artists Re-grouped) pay a new homage, in miniature, to their French Gobelin heritage, while also showing the breadth of creativity in current practice in Scotland after their successful inuaugural exhibition Vive la tapisserie ! at the Institute in 2009.
This visually-exciting exhibition is about both art and craft, where the primary aesthetic impulse is expressed and refined through the on-going action of making. They approach their work in many different ways but all the artists glory in the amount of time devoted and the consummate skill involved to produce these small works of art, each one telling its own individual story.
A programme of events is scheduled to accompany Vive la Tapisserie 2 ! to help visitors learn more about the exhibition:
In Conversation about Tapestry - Thursday 7 April, 7pm
Meet the Artists’ Saturday Morning - Saturday 16 April, 11am
About the artists:
The members of STAR* are all graduates of the Tapestry Department of Edinburgh College of Art, where the work pushed the boundaries of definition, moving from current fibre practice to electronic media and installation, underpinned by a strong emphasis on drawing.
The participating artists are: Archie Brennan, Sara Brennan, Amanda Gizzi, Linda Green, Maureen Hodge, Stephen Hunter, Fiona R Hutchison, William Jefferies, Ellen Lenvik, Birgitta MacDonald, Jo McDonald, Paul R Penrice, Anna Ray and Joanne Soroka, joined on this occasion by Robert Callender, who taught Drawing in the Department, and two other former graduates Elizabeth Radcliffe and Lesley Stothers.
Since their inaugural show at the French Institute in 2009, STAR* has taken part in the official Edinburgh Art Festival, exhibited at An Lanntair in Stornoway, during the annual Hebridean Celtic Festival, as well as showing in Glenrothes, Dumfries and London in 2010. Some of the group will be exhibiting in France later this year. Beyond that many of the individual STAR* members have been exhibiting all over the world, including several at the Jean Lurçat Museum and Centre for Contemporary Tapestry in Angers.
