Berit Fidje

Berit Johannessen Fidje (1944–2005) was a Norwegian textile artist known for her contributions to contemporary tapestry. Born on August 25, 1944, in Hamar, she pursued her education at the Statens Lærerskole i Forming in Oslo in 1968 and the Bergen Kunsthåndverkskole, specializing in textile design, in 1969. Following her studies, she worked as a designer at De Forenede Ullvarefabrikker in Ålgård from 1969 to 1972.

Fidje’s artistic practice was characterized by her exploration of traditional weaving techniques, often incorporating wool and linen to create intricate tapestries. Her works are part of public collections, including those of Nes municipality in Akershus.

Throughout her career, she participated in various exhibitions, such as “Norsk Tekstil Nå” at the Kunstindustrimuseet in Oslo in 1971 and the Sørlandsutstillingen in 1974, 1975, and 1977.

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Fidje served as a formingslærer (art teacher) at Follo Folkehøgskole from 1978. She was a member of Norske Kunsthåndverkere, contributing to the Norwegian arts and crafts community.

Berit Johannessen Fidje passed away on September 27, 2005, in Ås.
