Brit Haldis Fuglevaag
Brit Haldis Fuglevaag, born on April 19, 1939, in Kirkenes, Norway, is a distinguished textile artist and educator. She pursued her education at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Oslo (1959–1963) and furthered her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1963–1964).
Fuglevaag was among the pioneers in Norway to draw inspiration from contemporary Polish textile art. Her innovative approach has been instrumental in elevating textile art to be recognized alongside painting and sculpture. As a professor at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry from 1989 to 1996, she played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s textile art scene.
Her works are featured in several prominent institutions, including the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo and the Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum. Notable public installations include pieces in the ceremonial hall of the Oslo Courthouse and the Norwegian Police University College.
In recognition of her significant contributions to Norwegian textile art, Fuglevaag was appointed Knight, First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 2023.
Throughout her career, Fuglevaag has been a prominent advocate for the recognition of textile art as a legitimate and esteemed art form, both through her own creations and her dedication to education and advocacy within the arts community.
