Brita Been
Brita Been, born on February 15, 1947, in Moss, Norway, is a distinguished textile artist celebrated for her large-scale tapestries that blend traditional techniques with modernist aesthetics. She pursued her education at the Bergen School of Arts and Crafts and later at the State Teacher’s College in Forming, Oslo.
Since 1983, Been has been creating expansive tapestries characterized by bold patterns and vibrant colors. Her work often draws inspiration from traditional Norwegian textile art, particularly the ‘ruteåklær’ (square tapestries) and ‘rosesaum’ (rose embroidery) from Telemark. In her series “Repetisjoner,” she explores complex patterns through the interplay of horizontal and vertical lines, reminiscent of Bauhaus textiles.
Been’s innovative approach has earned her significant recognition. In 2019, she was awarded the prestigious Cordis Prize for Tapestry for her work “VINE,” highlighting her contribution to contemporary textile art.
Her works are included in several public collections, such as the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo and the Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum. She has also completed numerous public commissions, including a prominent tapestry for Bø Nursing Home.
Throughout her career, Been has participated in various exhibitions, both solo and group, showcasing her dedication to the evolution of textile art. Her work continues to bridge the gap between traditional Norwegian textile techniques and contemporary artistic expression.
