Gerd Utengen
Gerd Utengen (1925–2009) was a Norwegian painter and textile artist known for her vibrant use of color and dedication to traditional textile techniques. She received her education at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry and Bjarne Engebrets’ painting school.
Utengen’s artistic practice emphasized the importance of color, a principle she applied across both her painting and textile works. She spun her own yarn from Spelsau sheep, which she then dyed using lightfast colors, allowing her to achieve a rich and varied palette.
Throughout her career, Utengen completed numerous public art commissions and her works are included in various public and private collections, both in Norway and internationally. In addition to her artistic endeavors, she taught courses in yarn dyeing and spinning, sharing her expertise with others.
Gerd Utengen’s commitment to her craft and her innovative use of color have left a lasting impact on the Norwegian art scene.
