Ingunn Skogholt
Ingunn Skogholt (born 1952 in Oslo) is a prominent Norwegian textile artist renowned for her innovative tapestry works that blend traditional techniques with contemporary expressions. Residing and working at Ekely in Oslo, she constructs her pieces thread by thread, utilizing a diverse array of materials, including both natural and synthetic fibers, to create dynamic surfaces with intense color expressions.
Education and Artistic Development
Skogholt’s artistic education is extensive and international. She studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Oslo, the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland, and the Royal College of Art in London, where she earned a Master of Arts degree. Additionally, she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia, and undertook studies of French gobelin techniques in Paris.
Artistic Practice
In her tapestry creations, Skogholt builds surfaces meticulously, thread by thread, employing a wide range of materials, including glossy and matte, natural and synthetic fibers. This approach results in vibrant surfaces with intense color expressions. Her compositions are abstract, often incorporating recognizable figurative elements that, combined with spatial compositions, evoke impressions of landscapes, interiors, and urban scenes.
Exhibitions and Recognitions
Skogholt has held numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Craft Council Gallery in London, Galleri K, Kunstnerforbundet, and SOFT Gallery. She has also participated in various group exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including ten appearances at the Autumn Exhibition in Norway.
Her works are part of several public collections, such as the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Norway, the University of Oslo, and the British Crafts Council in London.
Public Commissions
Skogholt’s art adorns both public and private buildings, including Oslo Courthouse, the Government Building, and Hamar Courthouse, as well as several cruise ships. Her works are included in collections like Statoil, the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, and the University of Oslo.
Recent Activities
In 2023, Skogholt presented the exhibition “Material Minds” at SKOG Art Space, showcasing her latest works that continue to explore the tactile interpretation of materiality and the poetic universe she creates.
