Sidsel C. Karlsen

1941 –

Sidsel Calmeyer Karlsen (b. 1941) is a Norwegian textile artist celebrated for her innovative tapestries that blend traditional techniques with contemporary themes.

Education and Early Career

Karlsen studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry (Statens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole) in Oslo, where she honed her skills in textile arts. Since 1974, she has resided on Nesodden, Norway.

Artistic Practice

Karlsen’s work is deeply rooted in the Norwegian tapestry tradition, often drawing inspiration from the sea and maritime landscapes. The movement and color shifts of water in her pieces symbolize life’s dualities—joy and fear, life and death.

Notable Works and Commissions

Among her significant public art commissions is a tapestry for Ila Detention and Security Prison.

Exhibitions and Publications

Karlsen has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Norway and internationally. In addition to her textile work, she has explored photography on brushed aluminum and created works in fire-burned ceramics. She authored “Keramikkboka,” detailing the processes involved in her ceramic works.
