Solveig Aalberg

1955 –

Solveig Aalberg (b. July 23, 1955, Levanger, Norway) is a Norwegian textile artist recognized for her exploration of serial expressions, combining tactile materiality with conceptual depth.

Education and Early Career

Aalberg graduated from the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry (Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole) in 1983. She debuted with textiles and drawings at the Østlandsutstillingen and Kunstnerforbundet in 1984 and 1987.

Artistic Practice

Aalberg’s work is characterized by the use of weaving and embroidery, employing materials such as linen and cotton. She constructs her pieces with repetitive form elements that vary, aiming to unify tactile materiality with conceptual exploration. Her recent works focus on themes of movement and displacement, building up from repetitive forms that are varied.

Notable Works and Projects

One of her significant projects, “Continuum – vevde miniatyrer,” consists of a series of one hundred miniature weavings, systematically executed over four years. These small textiles possess an insistent character, managing to be both understated and overwhelming in expression.

Exhibitions and Publications

Aalberg has held solo exhibitions at venues such as Kunstnerforbundet, RAM galleri, Galleri F15, Akershus Kunstsenter, Hå Gamle Prestegard, Møre og Romsdal Kunstsenter, Det Gule Huset, Trafo Kunsthall, and Haugesund Kunstforening.

Her works have been featured in group exhibitions, including the Spring Exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. In 2020, she published the book “Continuum – Woven Miniatures,” presenting the hundred miniatures from the series, accompanied by texts from Ole Robert Sunde and Anne Karin Jortveit.
