Tor Hognestad

1943 –

Tor Christian Hognestad (b. November 6, 1943, Larvik, Norway) is a Norwegian textile artist recognized for his innovative tapestries that blend traditional techniques with contemporary expressions.

Education and Early Career

Hognestad graduated from the Bergen School of Arts and Crafts (Bergens Kunst- og Håndverksskole) in 1968. Following his education, he created tapestries with naturalistic motifs, characterized by harmonious color palettes and solid technique.

Artistic Practice

In the 1970s, Hognestad’s work adhered to the flat surface tradition of Norwegian tapestry, avoiding material experimentation. He introduced movement and depth through perspective lines and overlapping elements, as seen in works like “Pause” (1974) and “Høst” (1975). Later, he explored free-hanging tapestries, dissolving the surface into separate strips to emphasize the weight and fall of the threads, incorporating materials like metal wires and objects such as nuts.

Hognestad has completed several public art commissions, including:

  • Lindeberg School, Oslo (1981): Tapestry installation.
  • Nanset Church, Vestfold: Textile artwork.

Hognestad has been an active member of professional organizations, including the Norwegian Textile Artists (Norske Tekstilkunstnere) and the Association of Norwegian Visual Artists (Bildende Kunstneres Styre), serving in roles like jury member and artistic consultant.
